The “compensation” strategy can help us add numbers. EXAMPLE: = ? Step 1: Pick an addend that is close to a ten. + 1 9 5 + Step 2: Add to or subtract from that number to reach a ten. (In this case we will add 1 to get 10). Step 3: Add the new numbers. REMEMBER- this is not the real answer! 10 5 + Step 4: Adjust the answer to “compensate” for the addition of 1. = 15 Hmm, I added 1 to make the problem easier, so now I need to subtract out 1 to get the real answer. The real answer!! Click anywhere on slide to advance = 15 = 14

EXAMPLE 2: = Step 1: Pick an addend that is close to a ten. Step 2: Add to or subtract from that number to reach a ten. (In this case we will add 3 to get 60). Step 3: Add the new numbers. REMEMBER- this is not the real answer! Step 4: Adjust the answer to “compensate” for the addition of 3. Hmm, I added 3 to make the problem easier, so now I need to subtract 3. + 3 57 + 34 60 + 34 = 94 94 - 3 = 91

Example 3: = 502 + 436 Step 1: Pick an addend that is close to a hundred. Step 2: Add to or subtract from that number to reach the hundred. (In this case we will subtract 2 to get 500). Step 3: Add the new numbers. REMEMBER- this is not the real answer! Step 4: Adjust the answer to “compensate” for the subtraction of 2. Hmm, I subtracted 2 to make the problem easier, so now I need to add 2. - 2 500 + 436 = 936 936 + 2 = 938
