Gates Replication of Napa New Technology High School Part of a plan to provide choice for urban, inner city students in our district Dependent Charter School in the Sacramento City Unified School District Dependent Charter School Member of New Technology Network Autonomous with respect to Program, Instructional Pedagogy, and Budget

3 What do we do? Project Based Learning Collaborative Community Small, inclusive environment Technology is our tool, not our focus: 1 to 1 computer ratio Equity for all students Culture of Trust, Respect and Responsibility

4 What does this look like? No bells Active classrooms Absence of cliques Great student eye contact Students with a voice Obvious student collaboration: positive student interactions

5 All Students must… Have 260 credits to graduate Complete the A – G Requirements for entrance to the UC/CSU College systems Complete a 50 Hour Internship Complete 12 Colleges Units prior to graduation Complete 40 hours of Community Service Complete 4 years of Advisory Complete a Senior Project

6 What does this get us? Students who meet our 10 Learning Outcomes: Content Proficient Able to Write Proficiently Orally Proficient Able to Think Critically Technologically Proficient Able to Collaborate Prepared for a Career Solid Citizens with Ethical Behavior Able to Analyze and deal with Data Possessing a solid Work Ethic

7 So, what does this look like for real? Relevant learning: Solving the issues with West Nile Virus Freshman were given the job of investigating the West Nile Virus, its impact, and were charged with providing the Mayor of Sacramento, Heather Fargo, with how to effective engage our community in preventing infection with the virus.

8 Its Authentic… Students learn to drive conservation of California Forests through PBL. Project Based Learning creates a context for why we learn and connects students to the learning. Understanding Federal Appellate Courts is easy if you are the judge, jury, defense, and prosecution. Real world experiences must include the real world.

9 Its Collaborative Working together, holding each other accountable and producing a quality project yield students who, no matter what…get along. Collaboration provides the opportunity to fine tune social learning while at the same time creating an understanding in young people about synergy.

10 Its Active Macbeth, rewritten for the 21 st century, highlights the timelessness of Shakespeare. Applying Physics means building the catapult, predicting with calculations and testing in the park.

11 Its Engaging Learning takes active engagement constant interaction with the material and will each other. Preparing to present to a panel of experts drives student need to get a good product. One never knows something so well as when they have to explain it to someone else.

12 Its Academically Rigorous Students research, apply and synthesize what they learn. Students must complete 260 credits to graduate as well as 12 college units. Students must create and present a Digital Portfolio proving competence in the 10 Learning Outcomes.

13 Luis… As a freshman had a.50 GPA Graduated with a 1.68 GPA Will attend Sacramento City College Career in Law Enforcement

14 Veronica… As a freshman had a.82 GPA Graduated with a 2.02 GPA Senior Project: Effect Change in Latino Achievement at SNTHS Will attend Sacramento City College and intends to transfer to UC Davis Will pursue a career in Community Action (Latino Studies)

15 Julio… As a freshman: 1.36 GPA Graduated with a 1.91 with 265 credits Will attend Sacramento City College Will pursue a career in Electronics

16 Walking our talk… Adults in process… Relationships are everything… Patience, patience, patience… Adolescence and what occurs during this stage guides how and why we do what we do… Anonymity is their enemy… Do nothing that doesnt support our vision and mission… Clarity of outcomes defines our actions Fidelity to our Model guides our work Focus each year on that one thing that will take us to the next level if we do it well….
