Generalizing Fourth Grade Unit 3 Week 3 By Kristi Waltke

2 A generalization is a broad statement or rule that applies to many examples.
A clue word such as all, most, always, usually, or generally signals that an author is making a generalization. Some generalizations are valid, which means that they are supported by facts or details. Some are faulty, which means that they are not supported.

3 To practice finding generalizations, read the statements at the top of the slides. Then, see which is the generalization that the statements validate. Let's Practice!

4 No one had ever heard of sunrise or sunset and the husband in the story asks Iemanja’s daughter to tell him what night is. It is usually hard to understand something that you have never experienced. Change is hard on women.

5 With sorrow and with longing, the daughter left her home in the deep ocean and came to live with her husband in the daylight. Most people make sacrifices to be with the person they love. If you have a good family, you will always live with them.

6 Without a second lost, Iemanja packed a big bag of night for the servants to carry back to her daughter. Servants always work hard and carry heavy bags of night creatures. Mothers generally do everything they can to help their children.

7 For most people night is better than day.
To this day, the gifts of Iemanja’s daughter help celebrate each new sunrise. For most people night is better than day. Every morning at dawn in Brazil, the madragada slides onto the horizon, the morning star appears, the rooster crows, and the birds begin singing.
