I am going to give you a poem by Sylvia Plath. Please label this poem as you are taking notes with the different terms we are learning. On Thursday, you will be identifying some patterns in the poem!

So let’s start with the smallest part of poetry that we should know
The line!
The line is a line of a poem
This is how we always refer to it, it might be hard to give it another name
A line is the smallest part of the poem, other than a word
A group of lines helps to create the entire poem

Just like a paper, a poem should always have a title!

You’ll notice on your poem that these groups of lines are pretty small
Even if it is only one line by itself, there is a specific name for a group of lines
This is called a stanza
A stanza is a group of lines in a poem that creates a paragraph in the poem, of sorts

Now, there are special names for the number of lines that are grouped together in one stanza
These names help identify parts of poems easier
They also help poets identify what type of poem might be being written
A quatrain, for example, is a stanza with four lines

Another term that is important to identify in poetry is when one line seems to spill over into the other
This leaves the line unfinished, to go over into the next line or even into the next stanza
This spilling over is called enjambment
