The underlying physiological basis of the HOMA model. The feedback loop between the liver and the β-cell is central to the model. Plasma glucose concentration in the basal state is regulated by hepatic glucose output, which is insulin dependent (B). Insulin concentration is dependent on β-cell response to glucose (A). Insulin signals glucose uptake in fat and muscle (C and D). Glucose disposal is modeled in brain (E) and kidney (F) as being dependent only on glucose, and in fat and muscle as being dependent on glucose and insulin concentrations (C and D). Tara M.
