1 Diffusion Lab Diffusion in a baggie

2 Prelab Demonstrations
what happens when idodine comes into contact with starch?

3 Procedure 1.Fill a plastic baggie with a teaspoon of corn starch and half a cup of water..then tie the bag 2. Fill a beaker halfway with water and add ten drops of iodine 3. Place the baggie in the cup so that the cornstarch mixture is submerged in the iodine water mixture 4. Wait fifteen minutes and record your observations

4 Difussion the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration

5 osmosis the diffusion of water

6 What’s the difference?? Diffusion- can be in the air
Osmosis – Is ONLY water

7 Indicators they “indicate” a change has happened.
Like iodine can indicate starch is present if it turns purple

8 Molecules Always move from HIGH concentrations to LOW concentrations

9 Concentrated Lots of substance present

10 Hypo- Means less Hyper- means more

11 Permeable allows things to pass through
Like the window screen we talked about

12 wait for instructions The cornstarch resembles the cytoplasm of a cell
the plastic bag resemble the cell membrane Solid objects are not really solid at a molecular level The bag should act like a tiny screen door If molecules are small enough- they should be able to pass right through the bag wait for instructions

13 The orange iodine turns purple when it touches the white starch
