HOW TO CARTOON YOU You will be taking a digital photograph of yourself or someone in your family and making yourself (or them) look like they have suddenly been turned into a member of the cartoon characters family (but in our 3 dimensional world). STEP 1 Find several images of your favorite cartoon character in different poses. Tape these into your sketchbook. Write a description of the physical appearance of the character (in your sketchbook) – what makes them appear unique (come up with at least 5 things). Specify things like skin color, clothing, body type, shape of head and features, size of hands and feet, type of joints etc.

HOW TO CARTOON YOU STEP 2 Take a digital photograph of yourself (or have someone else do it) OR take a digital photograph of a family member. No scanning for this project – you must use a digital camera. Make a print of your photograph (the 4050 is fine). Using a tracing paper overlay, sketch what you plan to change on your photograph to make it look like a member of the cartoon characters family. Three (3) variations NOTE: The result should still be recognizable as you!

HOW TO CARTOON YOU STEP 3 Decide exactly which tools (and perhaps filters) can be used to alter the individual to look more like a cartoon. Think about things like… color adjustment and hue/saturation (skin and hair) body and head shape (liquefy filter? edit transform tool?) shape, size and placement of the features (cut and paste and rubber stamp?) thickness of arms, legs etc. (if you decide to show a body) What else makes a cartoon look like a cartoon (bearing in mind your image needs to look like a cartoon come to life)?

A partial list for your inspiration is on the following slide.
WHAT AND WHO TO CHOOSE What cartoon character should you choose? If you don’t have a favorite cartoon character do some internet research (or watch TV) to find one. Make sure you have a character that you are happy with, either because you like the way they look or because you like the character or humor. Consider what they look like and how you can duplicate that look in PhotoShop. A partial list for your inspiration is on the following slide.

Cartoon possibilities…
