Unitary, federal, & confederation

Federal structure Divides the nation's power among national, regional, and local government. The government's power is shared/separated and has checks and balances. Example: United States, Brazil, India

Unitary Structure Power is in the hands of the central government, but the government receives all of its power from the people. (Not a dictatorship because the power comes from the people). Central government creates local governments to receive administrative help. Most commonly used form of government. Examples: Great Britain, France, Japan, Israel

Confederation structure
The regional (state) governments have political power and sends only a few tasks to the national (weak) government. Example: European Union, OPEC, US during the civil war
