A, Provisional areas at risk for the establishment of Haemaphysalis longicornis in North America (red shading), based upon the reported northern distribution (approximate range: 19°N to 45°N) of this species in the Eastern Hemisphere (red shading). B, States reporting H. longicornis in the Continental United States (red shading): Arkansas, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia. States reporting H. longicornis populations in the United States come from reports by Rainey et al [2], the Maryland Department of Health, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the New York Department of Health, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the US Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratory, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Western Connecticut State University, and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. Maps were adapted from the baseline United States Geological Survey National Map. Future ecological niche modeling studies will undoubtedly refine areas at risk for H. longicornis establishment in North America.
