1 High impact news event – Donald Trump’s election
Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States of America. This is arguably the biggest news event of our generation. I will look at its impact across sector industries and the legacy it has left in terms of news.

2 Background Facts In the 2016 Presidential election campaign, there was a surprise victory for the Republicans, as Donald J Trump defeated former secretary of state Hilary Clinton’s democrat party. Trump won 304 electoral votes, beating Clinton’s 227. Trump took office as President officially on 20th January 2017, with Mike Pence as his Vice- President.

3 New policy legislation (According to CNN)
October 18, 2017: S.178 - Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act This bipartisan law "establishes requirements for the Department of Justice (DOJ) with respect to investigating and prosecuting elder abuse crimes and enforcing elder abuse laws." These requirements include the creation of a working group and comprehensive training for FBI agents. It also enhances victim assistance and aims to improve data collection. August 2, 2017: H.R. 3364 - Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act This legislation levies new sanctions against Russia and restricts Trump's own ability to ease sanctions in place against Moscow. The bill passed overwhelmingly in Congress. In a statement, Trump called the legislation "seriously flawed." June 23, 2017: S. 1094 - "Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017" This law gives the agency's leaders the ability to fire inept employees and protect those who uncover and report wrongdoing at the VA. Its signing represents the completion of one of Trump's campaign promises. It passed both bodies of Congress with broad bipartisan support.

4 Why this interested me What really interested me about this event, was the complete split in attitudes and opinions in America, and how this influenced media coverage. It seemed that this split caused there to be extreme political opinion on both sides of the political spectrum. Something interesting that arose from this whole campaign was the concept of ‘fake news’. Both sides of the media have seemed to fuel stories with political bias, not only in relation to the presidential election.

5 Legacy As this news event was somewhat of an upset, it sent shockwaves through the political world. It seems to have caused a sort of new-wave movement of conservatives. People look at things differently as the status- quo has been somewhat disrupted. In terms of news coverage, so many stories and headlines are dedicated to Trump – like harassment allegations and contraversial comments.

6 Media Coverage in the aftermath
CNN is quite anti-Trump, while FOX News would be more supportive of the POTUS. Media generally has been split between extreme left and right. It has been claimed that newspaper and media coverage is filled with bias and lies. There is a lot of coverage of protests against the president. There is evidence of media all over the world that has an anti-Trump narrative.
