Summer Skills Week The Staycation You have £2,000 to spend on a week’s family holiday (7 nights) for 2 adults and 2 children.

Summer Skills Week DECISION NUMBER 1: How far will you travel and what mode of transport will you use? Destination 1 – 250 miles away. Fuel costs are 15p/mile. Average speed = 60mph Train tickets are £80 return each for adults and £35 each for children. Destination 2 – 100 miles away. Train tickets are £50 return each for adults and £20 each for children. Work out the time it would take to travel to each place by car. Calculate all costs. Decide on a destination and work out how much you have left to spend. Come and collect a map of your chosen destination.

Summer Skills Week Now you know where you’re going, let’s make some more decisions. DECISION NUMBER 2: Where will you stay? (Prices of all rooms are to sleep two people) Hotel A - £120/night for each room Hotel B - £100/night for each room Hotel C - £70/night for each room. Calculate all costs and choose a hotel. Give the 6 figure grid reference for the car park. Measure the distance from your hotel to the beach (along the roads). Measure the distance from your hotel to the nearest car park (along the roads). Give the 6 figure grid reference for the hotel. Write directions from the car park to the hotel.

Summer Skills Week What will we do whilst we’re there? DECISION NUMBER 3: What to do? How much money have you got left? You can now plan a range of activities to entertain your family. You are allowed to add activities if the prices are realistic! At this point you can also switch to staying in a caravan to free up more money for activities. If you do this, you need to put your caravan site onto the map!

Summer Skills Week Now for the fun stuff! IF YOU HAVE ANY TIME LEFT, CHOOSE YOUR OWN ACTIVITY…. Create a unique invitation for your family. Tell them how much this trip will cost them and what you want to do. Design a poster to advertise your holiday to other people. Make a puzzle book with geography puzzles for the journey. Plot your activities on the map and write directions. Devise a game to play with your family on the journey.
