3 What is International Women’s Day?
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first March 8 IWD gathering supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Prior to this the Socialist Party of America, United Kingdom's Suffragists and Suffragettes, and further groups campaigned for women equality. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organisation specific. Make IWD your day! - everyday! What is International Women’s Day?

4 International Women's Day 2019 campaign theme: #BalanceforBetter
The future is exciting. Let's build a gender-balanced world. Everyone has a part to play - all the time, everywhere. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. Balance drives a better working world. Let's all help create a #BalanceforBetter.

5 Look at the following four pictures.
With a partner discuss how you think the people in the photos have helped the move towards gender parity. Click for the answer.

6 Emmeline Pankhurst (née Goulden; 15 July 1858 – 14 June 1928) was a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement who helped women win the right to vote. In 1999 Time named Pankhurst as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating "she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back

7 The Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968 was a landmark labour-relations dispute in the United Kingdom. It was a trigger cause of the passing of the Equal Pay Act 1970.

8 Actress Jennifer Lawrence surprised many by writing an essay for Lenny Letter about the gender wage gap that asked, "Why am I making less than my male co-stars?"

9 I'm used to winning. I've lost, too, but in the overall scheme of things, I'm used to winning, and I'm used to not just winning by chance, but putting in the work and getting prepared enough to know I can get the win. I'm not afraid of hard work. None of us were. That was how I saw it -- whatever it takes." -- Venus Williams on fighting for equal pay at Grand Slam events, in an April 2013 interview with espnW.com

16 USEFUL LINKS

17 Post your #IWD2019 message on social media with your "hands out" pose for a strong call-to-action for others to also help forge a #BalanceforBetter.

18 ACTIVITIES Using the BalanceforBetter selfie cards, take individual or group selfies to post on social media to make a pledge. Research an inspirational woman from your vocational field and put together a presentation or display about her. We would love to display some of these in the LRC or the HUB! Write a paragraph about a woman who has inspired you – this can be an historical character like Emmeline Pankhurst, or someone more recent – like Ester Ledecka who won Gold medals in the Snowboard dual slalom and Skiing Giant Slalom at the winter Olympics last year.
