After the Boston Tea Party, the British responded by closing the port of Boston and banning public meetings, which angered the Americans. In September 1774 representatives from all over the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to decide what to do. This was known as the ‘first congress’, and it was decided to rebel against Britain. This led to the War of Independence, which was fought for five brutal years. The Boston Tea Party 16th December 1773 led to the American War of Independence and the eventual loss of America as a colony of the British Empire.
