You will be reading a persuasive text where the author is presenting his perspective on waste in America.
Complete the Anticipation Guide on 2.13 (page 134). You will read the statements and mark if you agree or disagree. Then you will provide an explanation for your opinion. Write in COMPLETE SENTENCES.
Read the essay, “American the Not-So Beautiful.” Mark the texts with (?) when you have a question, (*) to make a comment, and (!) to signal an interesting idea. Answer the questions in the margin of the essay as well.

American people and companies are “trashing” the Earth.
Occasion: What are the circumstances surrounding this text?
Rooney is acknowledging that he is just as guilty as other Americans of heedlessly following the pattern of buying and throwing away.
Audience: Who is the target audience?
Americans (adults and companies), who are destroying our planet.
Purpose: Why did the author write this text?
Rooney’s purpose is to convince wasteful Americans that their trash is a serious problem and that they should cut back on their wastefulness before it is too late to save the planet.
Speaker: What does the reader know about the writer?
Rooney cares about the future of our Earth and wants us to change our culture’s wasteful ways and our relationship with the planet. Rooney wants us to know that he relates to his audience: he candidly admits that he has also been guilty of this destructive behavior.
