Deng’s reinstatement Hua Guofeng agreed to reinstate Deng Xiaoping to all of his previous positions The army also favored this measure He had strong support in the Party He was cleared of responsibility in the Tianamen Square incident

Tenth Central Committee Meeting
Three main decisions were made that shaped the politburo: The actions of the Gang of four were condmened Hua was made chairman of the party and Military Commision Deng was restored to the politburo Standing Committee and to his position as vice chairman of the Central Committee

Industrialization -Hua made the decision that china needed to focus on industrialization -Deng was put incharge of the Four Modernizations Agriculture Industry science and technology national defense -This helped to focus the economy

Reorganization of the Politburo
-The politburo was reorganized and three power groups emerged 9 members supported Hua 9 members supported Deng 3 members supported Ye - Congress called for “Unity, Stability, and cooperation” in Party affairs

Two Whatevers Policy In response to the Gang of Four Hua adopted a policy that was called the Two Whatevers “We will resolutely uphold whatever policy decisions chairman Mao made, and unswervingly follow whatever instructions Chairman Mao gave.” -This was not a popular policy with the people

Hua Guofeng Resigns -Hua found himself implicated in the crimes of the Gang of Four as the evidence was gathered -In 1980 he resigned as Premier - In 1981 he resigned as Party Chairman and chair of the Military commission -He was succeeded by Zhao Ziyang, Hu Yaobang, and Deng Xiaoping

Hua Guofeng Hua admitted that he had made mistakes and was allowed to be the Vice Chairman until the position was abolished in 1982 He was not harmed or imprisoned He remained a member of the Central Committee until 2002

Deng Xiaoping Deng had full control of the Party and the government by 1982 he wanted to make important changes so that china could compete with the west Wanted to put in place policies that differed from communist ideals He was still a communist and he made sure the political system stayed communist
