2 California Waterscape - 2012
The operative word for water is: “CONFLICT” between Agricultural, urban and environmental uses

3 Water is Almost Everywhere
The demand is for high quality water Other water supplies are available including seawater, brackish groundwater, re-cycled water and contaminated groundwater The challenge is to find ways to turn such alternate supplies into opportunities

4 Determine the Client’s Needs
Find out the client’s needs for water supply Quality and quantity Also determine wastewater disposal needs Don’t forget storm water runoff

5 Meeting the Needs Check with your local utility first
Understand their capabilities and restrictions – discuss with the client If the utility cannot meet the needs begin to look for cost-effective alternatives

6 Understanding the Alternatives
You may need to expand your expert contacts Find local or regional experts, academics, consultants and vendors If someone proposes technology that no one is familiar with, find a third party than can evaluate the concept

7 Strategies that Meet the Needs
Distributed management is working in many areas especially for wastewater Treated wastewater can be re-cycled locally Stormwater can be high quality and used with creative storage and minimal treatment

8 Strategies, cont’d Treated brackish or contaminated groundwater that is excess to client needs can be sold to the utility or used by co-located supply chain vendors The concept of alternate supplies is to develop an asset rather and a return on investment rather than a cost center

9 Strategy Implementation
Understand that some strategies have a resistance or process hill to overcome Find vendors and experts that have been successful with the chosen strategy at other locations with similar circumstances

10 Resources Fresno State has a “water cluster” that includes international companies Blue tech is being supported with incubation and testing Staff – Dan Clawson
