Certain states had the largest concentrations that took candidates outside
of the match including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York
A final survey conducted one year ago by the NRMP found among the
other interesting comments that over half the program directors said they “had offered positions outside of the match to be competitive.” Internal
Medicine, Pathology and Psychiatry were the highest number of
positions outside the match; roughly 30% each
