Who was Constantine? Introduction
4
Background: Emperor Constantine
First Roman Emperor Turmoil in the empire, split into 2 parts- east and west sides: Co-ruled by 4 Co-Emperors. Much competition between rivals for the throne while Licinius attacked Maximus. Constantine fought against Maxentius. They met in 312AD at the Milvian Bridge in Italy (Over the Tiber). Before the Battle Constantine was already sympathetic towards Christians but after supposedly getting an omen saying he will win the fight under the sign of the cross he made it the official religion in Rome. Made Christianity legal under the Edict of Milian in 313AD with his fellow emperor Licinius.
