2 Review What were the causes and effects of the French and Indian War?

4 Problems with War Great Britain had heavy debts from its recent war against France. They wanted the colonists to pay for the military in North America What usually happens when the country is in debt and needs money?

5 Sugar Act In 1764 Parliamnet passed the Sugar Act.
This law set duties, or taxes, on molasses and sugar imported by colonists. In addition the British would not let the colonies print their own money

6 “No Taxation without Representation”
James Otis and Samuel Adams begin to question the taxes and proved that they violated colonists’ rights. The ideas of Otis and Adams helped spread the slogan “No taxation without Representation.”

7 “No Taxation without Representation”
What does this mean? The colonists felt like the taxes were unfair and hurt business. The colonists felt like they shouldn’t get taxed unless they had more representation in Parliament

8 Committees of Correspondence
Committees of Correspondence: groups that contacted other towns and colonies and shared ways to challenge British laws.

9 Boycott They organized protest such as boycotts, in which people refused to buy certain goods from Britain.

10 The Stamp Act Stamp Act: a tax on newspapers and all printed materials

11 Sons of Liberty Sons of Liberty: a secret society formed in Boston to protest new taxes and frighten tax collectors Because of colonist efforts, the Stamp Act was repealed (ended) in 1766 However, Parliament was upset that colonists had challenged their authority

12 Townshend Acts Placed tax on imported glass, lead, paint, paper and tea. Besides paying for military it also paid for salaries of colonial governors to keep them loyal to the crown

Who is the audience? What the author’s purpose might have been?

What was going on at the time? What were people thinking and doing? What did people believe?
