The Holy Spirit at Work for Us
It is a surprise to many to know that very few bibles use the word “indwelling” – only the NASB pre 1995 contains it of common translations. Yet if you ask many religious people about the indwelling of the Spirit, they have a number of ideas. Romans 8 seeks to place the idea of the Law of Christ and the Holy Spirit as the same – alive inside us

4. Continuity of Thought
1. Sin leads to spiritual death (1-2) 2. Law reveals sin (3) 3. Justification is apart from Law (4) 4. Christ brings justification by propitiation (5) 5. We access this freedom by baptism (6) 6. Sin holds us captive through the flesh (7) 7. Being free requires being Spiritual (8) 8. The Holy Spirit does His part too (8)

5. Difficulty in Understanding
Two ideas: 1. The Holy Spirit dwells in us 2. He works between us and the Father
Romans 8 is difficult because there are two ideas about the Spirit:
The means and effort and purpose of His dwelling in us
What He is doing for us before God (in a sense, outside us)

Ge 3:17 ¶ Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.

7. The Creation Groans
All men struggle with mortality No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
Both the justified and the unrighteous struggle with the vanity of life
Ec 1:2 "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher; "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity." 3 What profit has a man from all his labor In which he toils under the sun? 4 One generation passes away, and another generation comes; But the earth abides forever.

8. The Creation Groans
All men struggle with mortality God’s hope: That all men would seek to overcome vanity
Physical death causes mankind to seek an eternal home and hope – subjected to vanity for His glory

9. The Holy Spirit Works
The Holy Spirit works in prayer - Identification of who is saved - Ephesians 1:13-14, 4: Corinthians 1:22, 5:5
Eph 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.
Eph 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
2Co 1:22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

The Holy Spirit works in prayer - Identification of who is saved - He works by faith - 1 John 5:13 - James 5:16/Matthew 6:9-13
1Jo 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

11. The Holy Spirit Works
The Holy Spirit works in prayer - Identification of who is saved - He works by faith - He works by sanctification - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
1Co 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.

12. Romans 8 and the Spirit
2Ch 6:20 "that Your eyes may be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your name, that You may hear the prayer which Your servant prays toward this place.
2Ch 7:1 ¶ When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.
Eze 10:18 Then the glory of the LORD departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim.

13. Through Him Predestined
Ephesians 3: God’s eternal purpose - Christ as the Firstborn of brethren Those in Christ: - Called - Justified - Glorified
Eph 3:8 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

14. Working of the Holy Spirit
Only manifestation to us is by Faith Confidence that prayers reach God
