What your study system is.

Who your OSCE group is.
Get the examinations nailed.
How many you need to attend.
When the Ethics Lectures are.
Get the histories nailed.
Finish your DOPs.
Keep going with that study system.
Start question books.

4. Firms Fun- 10 top tips for hospitals
Be early.
Be keen.
Be respectful.
A bit of pre-reading will get attention.
Don’t be afraid to ask for directions.
Don’t overthink the formative assessments.
Leave early if you think you’ll learn more at home (don’t just leave early to watch Netflix).
Have a bit of revision with you.
As soon as you find a friendly F1; ask them if they’ll help you get DOPs signed off.
Be nice! If you’ve set up a sign-off meeting with a consultant/ met a cool patient/ made friends with the ECG nurse, tell your firm partners!

5. Firms Fun- slightly different for GP…
Get mentally prepared for 8-6 days
But often 1-2 hour lunches
Much more opportunity to ask questions and request specific teaching.
And certain DOPs are really easy to get e.g. inhaler technique.
If you have GP in second term, you’ll be assigned a Community Action Project as your formative assessment.
Actually can be a lot of fun
Days off to “work on your project”

7. OSCE Obsession- the basics
Exam in last week of May
12 stations
10 minutes per station
4 examinations
4 clinical skills
4 histories

8. OSCE Obsession- confidence building
Sign up to an OSCE group as soon as possible.
Don’t worry about having more than one.
Try and have a group that isn’t just your close friends.
Actually go to Clinical Skills!
Ignore the rumours.
Ask around for mark schemes.
Ask throughout the year if you can take home bits of used kit.

9. OSCE Obsession- 48 hours to go
2 DAYS BEFORE: With your OSCE group, go through the basics you KNOW will come up- cardio exams, resp exam etc
1 DAY BEFORE: stations are released…repeat….repeat….repeat
Make a rule to take two walks and eat three meals
Don’t kill your friendship
Stop two hours before you plan to sleep and do something relaxing

12. Study Systems- the FOCP Exam
How to prepare:
Go to the MM tutorial in December
Attend the Ethics and Law DPD lectures.
Do the E-modules online and try to condense your notes as much as possible.
One third of the exam is Law, made up of multiple choice questions. The rest is Ethics- essay questions based on the pre-leased case. ​
Case released during December​.
Exam on 3rd January​.
Allowed to take up to 10 pieces of A4 in with you.

13. Study Systems- the Written Exam
How to prepare:
Design a system.​
Set deadlines​.
Stick to it.
150 SBAs, generally mini- clinical cases.
Exam in the last week of May (same week as OSCE).

18. How to do well For me, first term of third year felt far too busy​
Freshers + societies + early starts + tough consultants + osce tutoring + revision etc etc​
Ended up crying at firms…..
Not ideal.
What worked for me?
Taking a day off every week.​
Go outside​
Have screen-free time​
Cook ​
See people who aren’t third year medics​
Welfare services (anonymous), personal tutor
