1 Day 7 – Conservation of energy close reading
Mr. Lambert Integrated Science 1A Trimester 1, 2014

2 Bell Ringer – Thurs, 10/23 Copy the following questions and leave space to answer them as the video plays: What type of energy does the car have before it is released? What happens to this energy as the car moves closer to the ground? What type of energy does the car have at the bottom of the jump?

3 Agenda Bell Ringer Ghost video Do Ghosts Exist? – Close Reading
Close Reading – Evidence search Exit Slip

4 Learning Targets On your Bell Ringer Sheet, write the following: We will apply the conservation of energy to help explain real life questions.

5 Name the energy! If you think the car has more potential, sit down!
If you think they’re equal, raise your hand! If you think the car has more kinetic, raise both hands!

10 Do you think ghosts exist? Why or why not?
Ghost Video As you watch this video, decide: Do you think ghosts exist? Why or why not?

11 Close Reading – Part A & B
Answer Part A: “Before Reading” Decide whether you agree or disagree with each statement Circle your choice under BEFORE (save after for later) Skim the reading and answer Part B Skim means “look it over” You should only read key things: the title, author, headings, and bold, underlined, or italicized words

12 Mark the text as we read aloud
Close Reading – Part C Mark the text as we read aloud CIRCLE any unknown words, scientific words, or physics vocabulary Write a QUESTION MARK on the side near something that doesn’t make sense Put an EXCLAMATION POINT on the side beside anything new or interesting

13 Close Reading – Part D Read through the texts from the beginning, looking for answers to the questions When you find answers, underline them and then write the NUMBER of the question in the margin beside it Questions are in order – so it’s easiest if you start at the beginning and read through!

14 Exit Slip – Part E Tomorrow you will answer an on-demand writing prompt about the existence of ghosts. Look back at the texts and write THREE pieces of evidence you could use to argue that ghosts don’t exist (based on conservation of energy) from a scientist’s perspective.

15 Exit Slip Fill in the blanks!
Conservation of energy states that energy cannot be __________ or __________. Energy can only _________ from one form to another. Conservation of energy states that the total amount of energy will __________. An object can have _________ types of energy. Transforms/changes from one form to another – multiple forms at once Limits what we can do – amount of work
