Do Now Take out packet w/ H.W.
Write in your notebook some things that you notice and some things that you wonder. A family of 4 goes to a soccer game. Tickets are $5 each. Each family wants a drink that costs $2.00.

Writing and Expanding Expressions
Today I will be able to: Create tape diagrams Create addition and subtraction expressions So I can apply my knowledge to model addition and subtraction expressions from written and verbal statements. I will show I know it by working independently or with a partner to solve at least 7 out of 10 whiteboard problems. 6.EE.A.2a and 6.EE.A.4
4
Language Objective By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Working independently or with their partners, students will be to verbally discuss and write the tape diagram models or expressions of addition and subtraction after reading or listening to a statement using their whiteboards (For example, write an expression to show h decreased by 13 is the same as h – 13). Academic math Language Vocabulary: tape diagram, addition, subtraction, expression, decrease, less than, sum, reduced, plus, bar diagram, difference.

Without parentheses, only “a” is being taking away from “c”, where the expression says that a + b should be taken away from “c”.

Rapid Problems Solve on your whiteboard
1. Write an expression to show the sum of 7 and 1.5 2. Write two expressions to show a number increased by 11. Then, draw models to prove that both expressions represent the same thing.
16
Let’s try some more… 3. Write an expression to show the sum of x and y
x + y or y + x 4. Write an expression to show h decreased by 13. h - 13 5. Write an expression to show k less than 3.5 3.5 - k 6. Write an expression to show the sum of g and h reduced by 11 g + h - 11
17
Just a few more… 7. Write an expression to show 5 less than y, plus g.
y – 5 + g 8. Write an expression to show 5 less than the sum of y and g. y +g - 5 9. Write an expression to show 4 less than the sum of g and 5. g 10. Write an expression to show 4 decreased by the sum of g and 5. 4 – (g + 5)

Discuss with your partners what are some things you need to know to solve this problem (evidence from the problem itself). Discuss with your partners what are some things you need to know how to solve this problem (how are you going to solve it? What skills do you need?) If time
20
After discussing with your partners, on the left side of your notebook you are going to do the ROUGH DRAFT of your open response. Label your parts to your work. Make sure to show evidence for your answers. Tomorrow you will write the FINAL DRAFT on the right side of your notebook.
