5. Sustainable Town Centres
Egan Wheel
Sustainable town centres have lots of characteristics
For a town centre to be sustainable it needs to meet these criteria
Environment is one of the eight key characteristics

6. Town: Hucknall
North West of Nottingham
Tram line into Nottingham
Near junction 27 of the M1
Population of 32,000
Highstreet runs through the centre of Hucknall
Starts at Market Place (NW) Watnall Road
Ends at Byron Bingo (SE)
Section for our study – 360 metres long

7. Data collected from 6 sites down the highstreet: Bibiana Lounge, Severn’s Butchers, Savers, Costa, Lighthouse Charity Shop, Byron Bingo.
Questionnaire/Bi-polar survey:
Environment measured at all sites on a scale of -3 to +3. For example graffiti and litter.
Sound Survey:
Sound measured at the different points on the highstreet using decibel app.
Footfall:
Completed at the 6 locations (3 road side and 3 pedestrian area) for two minutes. People in both directions – 1 timing and 2 counting (opposite sides).

With a radar diagram the wider a shape is the better. You may remember doing these in food tech.
Bibiana and the Butchers had the best environment with little litter, dog fouling and fumes. The streets and pavements were well kept.
The Lighthouse and Bryon Bingo did not score well on any of these aspects.

We found that the sound got steadily noisier as we moved from Bibianas down to Byron Bingo where it was the worse.

Byron Bingo had a large footfall but was not very attractive? Why is this?

How can you relate this to the Egan Wheel?
Some of the things The Egan Wheel suggests that for a town centre needs to be sustainable is to have a variety of activities and be clean and attractive.
We found that more people visited the area of Hucknall that was more attractive and with a higher variety of shops including food, clothes and a chemist. This area had more chain shops.
The other end of Hucknall has less variety, it is less attractive and has less chain shops. For example ……..
Therefore, I think the town centre is not sustainable as people seem to be more attracted to one part than the other.
