1
California’s Clean Energy Future
PANC Annual Seminar April 19, 2010 Melissa Jones Executive Director
2
Overview California’s Ambitious Environmental and Energy Policy Goals
Reducing Statewide GHG emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, and 20% of 1990 levels by 2050 Loading Order Continues as Foundation Energy Efficiency & Demand Response top priority 33% Renewables by 2020 Followed by CHP, DG and Clean Generation
3
Demand Transform California’s built environment
Demand Response will play a major role in meeting peak power needs Distributed Generation technologies will be deployed at significantly higher levels Electrification of transportation coupled with a cleaner energy supply will become a central component of GHG reductions
4
Supply California will develop a mix of renewable resources to meet the 33% RPS while meeting operational and reliability needs Natural gas will continue to be essential to meet California’s electricity, providing for operational and reliability needs California will be a leader in commercializing Carbon Capture and Storage technology
5
Transmission, Distribution, and Operations
Transmission Planning and Permitting will evolve so that it is no longer a barrier Advanced metering and smart grid will empower customers to use energy more efficiently Energy storage will be a significant feature of the cleaner power system
6
Additional Supporting Processes
The electricity sector will interact with a state, regional, and/or federal GHG cap-and-trade system to ensure minimum cost of emissions abatement California will accelerate innovation and commercialization of emerging technologies California is adapting to planning for climate change California citizens are engaged as partners in the state’s efforts
