1
HOW TO SORT OUT THE MEANING OF A DIFFICULT TEXT
2
Everything you write stays at the tables, so if you see something that will help you, personally with your work, WRITE IT DOWN in your comp. book!!
3
You already know what this is about:
Patrick Henry is trying to persuade the Virginia Convention (and all Americans) to declare war against England.
4
Step One Open you literature books to either 102 or 104, and locate your quote: Is this in the beginning of his argument? At the end? In the middle?
5
Step two Read the section out loud once, so that your group can get (re)introduced to the section. Group members should annotate (write on!) the copies on the desk while you are reading. (You have 3 minutes to complete this task: GO!!!)
6
Step Three To get credit, all members must participate in this activity: Read the first sentence again. Discuss what it means Look up words that are strange or possibly new or used differently Write a paraphrase of the line (translate the words into everyday language). Repeat for all lines of the section
7
If you finish early, Have members underline words in their copy of the text that they think are important. Write down the definition of words that you think the next group may struggle with.
8
DROP EVERYTHING! You are now leaving this section of the text. Move to the next section of the text…
9
NEW TASK When is this section (Geginning? Middle? End?)
Read the original out loud Read the translation Add/edit anything you think is incorrect You have 6 minutes
10

11
3rd Table - repeat When is this section (Geginning? Middle? End?)
