Ex. 1. We used to talk to our friends. Ex. 2. They have written to Mary. Ex. 3. She has to listen to Mrs. Miller. Ex. 4. He returned to school. Ex. 5 When we arrived, she had left.

3 PAST PERFECT TENSE THE PAST PERFECT TENSE IS USED TO DESCRIBE ACTIONS THAT “HAD” HAPPENED. Ex. When we arrived, Mary had left. Ex. Before 2003, I had lived in Spain.

The Past Perfect has two parts. Imperfect Tense of haber + past participle Imperfect Tense of haber había=I had ________ habías=You (informal)had _______ había=He/She/You (formal) had ______ habíamos=We had _________ habían=They/You-all had _______

6 FORMING THE PAST PERFECT TENSE
The past participle remains the same for Past Perfect as it does for Present Perfect. Take an –AR infinitive, remove the –AR and add –ADO Ex. hablar=hablado (spoken/talked) Take an –ER infinitive, remove the –ER and add –IDO Ex. comer=comido (eaten) Take an –IR infinitive, remove the –IR and add –IDO Ex. vivir=vivido (lived)

TAREA: Write the following in your notebook. WATCH TENSE! He had gone to school early last Tuesday. I went last Friday. Mateo slept during class. He had not gone to bed (acostarse) early last night. Have you (Ud.) lent the books to Mateo? Marta was wearing a hat in class. She had bought the hat at Macy’s. You-all had to work a lot yesterday. I did not work. While they were studying, she had eaten the candy.

The Irregular past participles also remain the same for Past Perfect as it does for Present Perfect. escribir-escrito (to write) 8) romper-roto (to break) volver-vuelto (to return) 9) descubrir-descubierto (to discover) poner-puesto (to put/place) 10) morir-muerto ver-visto (to see) decir-dicho ( to say/tell) hacer-hecho (to make/do) abrir-abierto (to open)

10 PAST PERFECT TENSE THE PAST PERFECT TENSE IS USED TO DESCRIBE ACTIONS THAT “HAD” HAPPENED OFTEN BEFORE ANOTHER PAST ACTION. Ex. Before 2003, I had lived in Spain.

11 PAST PERFECT TENSE Often when the Past Perfect is used, the terms “before” and “already” are used. How to convey actions that “had” happened before another past action using: antes de + infinitive/noun: Ex. Before calling, we had gone to the store. Antes de llamar, habíamos ido a la tienda. Antes de almuerzo, habías hecho tu tarea. Before lunch, we had done our homework.

REMEMBER! Past and Present Perfect are very similar! Read and choose carefully. Try the examples below in your notebook: She has told the truth. Had we listened to our teacher(f) before leaving? The boys had already returned the books when they left.

13 PAST PERFECT TENSE How to convey actions that “had” happened using already (ya): ya= already Ex. She had already left when we arrived. Ella ya había salido cuando llegamos.
