How did the Depression affect Germany?
Why were there problems between ? Unemployment rose to 6 million by 1932. Millions became homeless. Taxes fell as people were being thrown out of work. The government was taken by surprise at the scale and speed of the depression. It had no idea how to deal with it. Why did people begin to listen to the Nazis?
Democracy was seen to be failing in Germany. Hitler offered solutions to Weimar’s problems. Force was used to overcome opponents. Effective use of Propaganda. The Nazis offered strong leadership. However: The Nazi’s NEVER gained an electoral majority in an open election. Hitler was invited to become chancellor of Germany by politicians from other parties who believed that they could control him. Few people realised the lengths to which the Nazi’s would take their anti-semitism. Aim: To explain (B) or evaluate (A) the reasons why people began to listen to the Nazis

Why did support for the Nazis grow?
Appealing promises: the Nazis promised… Jobs for the unemployed in state financed public works programmes. Help for employers to increase profits. Help for shop-keepers and farmers. They promised that Germany would be great again! The Nazis were well organised and disciplined – this appealed to middle class people at a time of chaos Joseph Goebbels, in charge of propaganda, led a huge campaign: Poster campaign: portrayed Hitler as a strong leader, who would ‘save’ Germany. The Nazis were supported financially by wealthy industrialists. The SA (thugs Hitler hired to protect the Nazis): By 1933 there were 500,000 stormtroopers. Their motto was, ‘all opposition must be stamped into the ground’. They beat up opponents– mainly in street fights called clashes Hitler then complained about this violence and promised the Nazis would bring proper law and order.
