3 STEPS OF THE WRITING PROCESS
Free writing 1. Prewriting 1. Prewriting Writing for a given period of time on any subject in sentence form to get the ideas you have down on paper. There is no erasing, just new thoughts. Brainstorming Rapidly write all ideas/words that pertain to the subject, regardless of relevance. Later, go back and cross off what you don’t need and link like ideas together. Clustering / Mapping Start with central idea in middle and branch main topics, then sub-topics, then examples. This shows the relationship between the main topic and the details.

Writing TIPS TO THE ROUGH DRAFT * Name, class and date on top right hand corner of all pages * Number all your pages * One staple in the top left hand corner * Double space * Margin to margin * Single sided * Pencil or pen * Line space at end of page Time to write the rough draft! WRITE, WRITE, WRITE! HOLD IT! BEFORE MOVING ON, DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH CONTENT?

Revising is . . . 1. Prewriting 3. Revising making decisions about how you want to improve your writing. -looking at your writing from a different point of view -picking places where your writing could be clearer, more interesting, more informative and more convincing. PEER FEEDBACK Use the people around you to get fresh ideas, help and constructive criticism. Adding What else does the reader need to know? Rearranging Is the information in the most logical and most effective order? Removing What extra details or unnecessary bits of information are in this piece of writing? Replacing What words or details could be replaced by clearer or stronger expressions?

Editing is . . . 1. Prewriting 4. Editing * spelling *capitalization *punctuation *grammar *sentence structure *subject/verb agreement *consistent verb tense *word usage Word Processor Grammar and Spell check! Self Edit Read your own work backwards. Read the last sentence, then the second last sentence, etc. Does each sentence make sense when you read it on it's own? Do you see or hear any errors in the sentence? Peer Edit Get a fresh set of eyes on your work. Your mind often fills in the problem areas. A different person will bring new ideas to the paper.

Publishing Handing it in to your teacher Reading aloud in class Posting in blog, forum, web page, etc. Put it in book form Tips for your final draft: * Blue or black ink pen or typed * Center title on top line with a line space that follows * Name, class and date in top right hand corner * Write or type margin to margin * Indent and/or leave a line space for paragraphs * Leave a line space at the bottom of the page * Single sided (unless instructed otherwise)
