What effect has Jean Guthrie’s death had on Chris (pp.62–66) and on the rest of the family? How has Chris’s relationship with Will altered? (pp.66, 101–102) [pp. 69, 103–104] How has Chris’s attitude to her father developed in this section? (in particular, pp.72, 91, 103–104, 105–106) How does Chris feel about Ewan Tavendale? (pp.86–87, 100) How would you describe the relationship between Will and his father? (pp.78, 79, 81–82, 101–102)

In your groups, you are going to analyse one aspect of ‘Drilling’. The final outcome is to produce a set of notes to be shared with the rest of the class. These notes can be in the form of PP slides, table, mind map or just basic notes – it is your group’s choice. It must include: Relevant quotes (at least 8) Detailed analysis of quotes One laptop for each group to complete the notes. You have today and tomorrow to complete the task.

Changes within/to the family Jean’s suicide, Dod and Alec leaving, Will leaving Chris’ developing sexual awareness Tink, her father, Mollie Ewan First impressions, the kiss, attraction, Chris’ confused feelings Theme of fire Weather, burning of the whins, Peesie’s Knapp, lust, anger John Guthrie R’ship with Will, his pride, his downfall Traditional activities and their relevance to the community Harvest, threshing, New Year, people of Kinraddie

The final question will ask you to compare or contrast the extract you have in front of you with an idea or theme from elsewhere in the text. This should be set out in bullet points using sub-headings. Marks are allocated as follows: 2 marks commonality 2 marks extract provided 6 marks elsewhere in text studied
