What is a Hypothesis? A Hypothesis is a statement suggesting that something is the case. Here’s one! THE MOON IS MADE OF GREEN CHEESE!

How would we prove or disprove our Hypothesis?
We could all go in a a pure mad wee spaceship and look for ourselves! You’re takin’ that too far! Or…

We could stop being silly and state a proper Modern Studies Hypothesis!
A good hypothesis will be slightly provocative or exaggerated. Blacks and Hispanics are more likely to do better in education than whites. Such hypothesis are easier to prove or disprove.

Stating your Aims Once you have stated your Hypothesis, you will be asked to state two AIMS Aims are things you might have to find out to prove or disprove your Hypothesis

Start each Aim with the phrase “I aim to find out…”
“Blacks and Hispanics are more likely to do well in education than whites” (Hypothesis) Start each Aim with the phrase “I aim to find out…” Aim 1. “ I aim to find out what percentage of blacks go to college compared with whites Aim 2. “I aim to find out what white high school drop out rates are compared to Hispanics.”

Methods When you know your Hypothesis and have stated your Aims you will be asked to: Describe an investigation method Explain the advantages and / or disadvantages of another method

“Describe how you would find relevant web sites to help you with your investigation” (2 marks)
“I would use a search engine like ‘Google’ to find good web sites on Equality in the USA. I would enter search terms like “Black, Hispanic and White poverty in the USA”. Once I had found some good web sites I would search them if they have a search box. I might take notes or I might copy some of the relevant information and look at in detail later”
