Norwalk High School 2019 Freshman Success Summer Academy Welcome to Norwalk High School and the Freshman Success Summer Academy.! Students entering Norwalk High School for the school year are invited to participate in a 5-week summer program, July 8th -August 9th . This program is generously funded by the Carver Center.    Research suggests that the most difficult transition point in education is from middle to high school. Navigating a larger environment, excelling in credit-bearing courses, meeting graduation requirements, and juggling competing priorities can be quite challenging. The Freshman Summer Academy will be the necessary bridge into high school. Students enrolling in the program will participate in the following courses: English, math, social studies/history, science, and study skills. Students will take field trips to enhance team building and the academic program. Breakfast and lunch are provided for free each day. To apply, students should complete and return the Registration Form, Emergency Form $ Enrichment Fee Applications should be returned to: Mr. Job Fernandez Norwalk High School 55 County Street, Norwalk, CT 06581 or by fax Students must have a completed application on file before the start of the program. Acceptance notification will be delivered via if an address is provided. Space is limited, so apply early! Program Dates: July 8th to August 9th Daily Schedule 8:30 – 9:00 Breakfast (free) 9:00 – 1:00 Academics 1:00 – 1:30 Lunch (free) 1:30 – 3:15 Activities 3: Dismissal Summer Academy Faculty Principal Mr. Reginald Roberts  Summer Program Director Mr Job Fernandez Instructors Ms. Chanel Gardiner Mr Evan Byron Ms Lisa Strom Ms Kasey Dunn Since the summer program covers a great deal of material in a short period of time, punctuality and perfect attendance are expected. Transportation will be provided to and from Norwalk High School for eligible students. All school conduct codes for the regular school year are in effect during the summer program. Dismissal from the program based on these codes is the decision of the Summer Program Administrator.

2 Parents and accepted students will be invited to attend
an information session, hosted by Mr. Job Fernandez, on May 21st in the NHS Library.  Course Descriptions Learning from the Challenges of Our Times:  This English program is designed to improve a student’s ability to analyze, synthesize, and make connections to both literature and nonfiction. The course will focus on reading and analyzing key elements of various genres of literature, including novels, short stories, essays and poetry. Students will also study the grammatical structure of the English language and apply their literacy skills to fiction and non-fiction works.    Math Matters This course will help students bridge the gap between 8th grade Common Core and Algebra I or Algebra I and Algebra 2. Math concepts that will be highlighted include computations, solving equations, and graphing. Students will practice the mathematical study skills necessary for success in high school. Students will complete their summer assignments. They will also be introduced to Kahn Academy’s resources through College Board. Science Sense Students will participate in hands-on activities to prepare for a high school science course. They will practice lab specific math skills, science inquiry, following lab activity directions independently, graphing data, while completing engaging scientific investigation. What happened? This course focuses on getting students excited and ready for 9th grade history. Using academic sources, discussion, and group work, students will investigate exciting events in history. Students will practice research and presentation skills in preparation for 9th grade research projects. S.W.A.G. Skills (Study, Work, Achieve, Graduate) Featuring the essential learning strategies for becoming a better student, this course helps students learn how to prepare for class, develop textbook reading strategies, use effective note-taking techniques, strengthen their test-taking skills, and carry their skills forward.
