Agenda Notes: Protein Structure Activity: Toothpickase
Homework: Read and take notes on Ch Essential Questions: Describe how neuron structure and organization reflect function in information transfer? Explain how action potential signals are conducted by axons?
4
Basic Structure of Proteins
Proteins are polymers of amino acids 20 standard amino acids coded for by DNA Proteins are large, complex molecules with multiple levels of structure Primary: order of amino acids Secondary: twists or folds in amino acid chain Tertiary: overall 3D shape Quaternary: multiple chains of amino acids The structure at each level depends on: How the amino acids interact with each other How the amino acids interact with the environment (i.e.: water)
5
Amino Acid Structure
9
Primary Secondary Structure
Amino acids that are close to each other can interact The order and kind of the amino acids determines which amino acids interact, and how The interactions can affect the local shape of the chain
11
Secondary Tertiary Structure
Amino acids located in different regions of the chain can interact The order and kind of the amino acids determines which amino acids interact, and how they interact The interactions determine the overall 3d shape of the protein
12
Tertiary Structure
13
Tertiary Quaternary Structure
Amino acids located on different chains can interact The order and kind of the amino acids determines which amino acids interact, and how The interactions determine if multiple chains link together to form the protein
14
Quaternary Structure
16
Big Idea What a protein can do depends on its structure
The structure depends what amino acids are present in the protein, the order of the amino acids, and the amino acid interactions (with each other and the environment)
