1900s: The production of educational films led to a field of Instructional Technology that focused on Instructional Media. 1920s: There was an increase use of film, pictures, and lantern slides in the public schools. 1928: Visual Instruction defined as the enrichment of education through the seeing experience involving the use of all types of visual aids. Lance CurryEDIT 6100EDr. Orey 1920s – 1940s: Advancements in sound shifted the focus of the field from visual instruction to audiovisual instruction through the use of sound recordings, radio broadcasting, and motion pictures with sound. 1950s: The growth of television continued the interest in instructional media.

(Finn) 1963: The Department of Audiovisual Instruction (later – AECT) introduced a definition that focused on the design and use of messages which control the learning process. 1964: Educational Technology could be though of as the application of science to instructional practices. Lance CurryEDIT 6100EDr. Orey 1970: The Commission on Instructional Technology provides a definition that focused on the systematic process that includes specifying objectives and the design, implementation, and evaluation to increase effectiveness. 1977: The AECTs new definition: Educational technology is a complex, integrated process involving people, procedures, ideas, devices, and organization, for analyzing problems and devising, implementing evaluating, and managing solutions to those problems, involved in all aspects of human learning..

Lance CurryEDIT 6100EDr. Orey 1994: Due to the updated learning theories and technological advances such as the microcomputer and the Internet, the AECT updated their definition: Instructional Technology is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning. 2006: The AECTs recent definition: Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.

Technology The equipment, tools, devices, instruments, etc. that are used in completing a task more efficiently (in terms of cost and/or workload) than by previous means.
