LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS
Presented By: Stephen Mang
2
WHAT TO EXPECT Definition of a differential
Why a differential is needed Different kinds of differentials Elaboration on limited slip differentials Different kinds of limited slip differentials
3
WHAT IS A DIFFERENTIAL AND WHY IS IT USED?
Shifts the power from the engine to the wheels Acts as a final gear reduction in the system Allows the wheels to spin at different speeds Why it is used: Torque must be transferred 90 degrees Wheels spin at different speeds during a turn Different driving surfaces provide different traction
4
DIFFERENT DIFFERENTIALS
There are 3 major types of differentials: Open differentials Locking differentials Limited slip differentials
5
WHAT IS A LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL?
Balance between open differentials and locking differentials Acts as an open differential when cornering Acts similar to a locking differential when a wheel starts slipping Preferred differential due to its versatility
6
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS
Spring and clutch type Viscous coupling Locking TORSEN (TORque SENsing)
