2. Nouns A noun is a person, place, thing or idea.
Person – Mrs. O’Leary (proper noun), athlete (common noun)
Place – St. John School (proper noun), library (common noun)
Thing – Cheerios (proper noun), marker (common noun)
Idea – bravery, intelligence, faith

3. Singular & plural nouns
Add ‘s’ to most nouns to form the plurals.
airport = airports
Add ‘es’ to form the plurals of nouns ending in s, x, z, ch, and sh.
fox = foxes
watch = watches
Some plural nouns are irregular and are not formed by adding ‘s’ or ‘es’.
child = children
tooth = teeth
moose = moose

4. More singular & plural nouns
If a noun ends in a y preceded by a vowel, form the plural by adding s.
attorney = attorneys
If a noun ends in a y preceded by a consonant, form the plural by changing the y to i and adding es.
discovery = discoveries
If a noun ends in o preceded by a vowel, form the plural by adding s.
radio = radios

If a noun ends in o preceded by a consonant, form the plural by adding es.
tomato = tomatoes
For most nouns ending in f or fe, form the plurals by adding s.
roof = roofs
For some nouns ending in f or fe, form the plural by changing the f to ves.
