I. Origins of the Cold War: Yalta Conference - Post-War Germany
A. Yalta (02/1945): “Big Three” decide to split Germany (and Berlin) into occupation zones, France gets a fourth zone later B. Goals: 1) demilitarize their zone, 2) rebuild its economy, 3) punish war criminals 4) reunify w/new German gov * All German land taken in WWII given back Big Three

II. Origins of Cold War: Post War Japan
A. Potsdam Conf.: Churchill tells Truman not to trust Stalin, so Truman warns Stalin of a secret weapon that US may use on Japan 1. When US uses A-Bomb, Stalin unable to co-occupy Japan B. US will demilitarize Japan & rebuild economy focusing on exports 1. MacArthur in charge of Japan, allows Emperor Hirohito to stay but PM Tojo and other war criminals tried & executed 2. U.S. keeps possessions taken by Japan C. Stalin upset 1. competition for world power & influence between US & Soviet Union, known as the Cold War begins
