Puberty and conception year 5 & 6
Parent/Carer Guide Puberty and conception year 5 & 6
2
Why is this session needed?
Puberty is part of the relationships and sex education (RSE) Children need to know about the ways their bodies will change. Children need to know how to respect themselves and others. Children need support to understand the messages they are exposed to from an early age, from the media, television, advertising, internet, peers & older children etc… Children need knowledge, resources and support to cope with change. It is advised that all schools to have a spiral RSE education (which means to be included in the curriculum for all age groups in an age appropriate way) We can not stop puberty happening, we can support them in understanding why it happens and how to cope with the physical and emotional changes they may encounter, and give reassurance they are not alone.
3
Objectives of the session:
To have an awareness of the changes that will happen to both boys and girls physically and emotionally. To know the correct names for the basic parts of the body and their function. To understand the importance of personal hygiene. To dispel myths and diffuse any mixed messages they have been exposed to. To be part of a spiral curriculum not a one off lesson!
4
How do we keep the session on track..
Children will be given a group class room agreement to make the learning environment safe. We ask if they would like to add anything?
5
Confidentiality As with any topic we will explain this by saying…
What is said in the room stays in the room. Unless anyone says anything that makes me think you or anyone else might be at risk of harm or being hurt. I will then have to tell another adult so that you or another person can be kept safe . School will discuss with parents
6
What will a session look like?..
Whole group- what puberty means will be explained, when and why it happens. What changes will happen to both boys and girls bodies on the inside and on the outside, some are the same, some are different How will they feel emotionally? The team will use a selection of visual aids, questioning and work sheets, to explain and answer these questions.
7
Question box End of the first session.
Confidential question box left for pupils to ask questions, which will be answered in next session Pupils will be told we will not read out who the question is from. We will say if question not appropriate, and when they will get this education . Pupils are asked to make the question not about a specific person. Write their initial on so me can safeguard them from harm If we do not read their question out we ask them to see us at the end for a chat as to why.

What are these disturbing creatures?
They stomp They growl They sulk They roar They leave deposits on the floor They phone They moan They smell They snore They barricade the bathroom door They grunt They groan They spend Ignore , my please to stop, then beg for more Who are these strange creatures, Who hide behind my children's features? What wild exotic place has sent these beasts to my environment? They should be on the jungle floor, not prowling my neat corridor. I am all things they’ve come to hate, I watch, but can’t communicate Not like a parent anymore I feel like David Attenborough.
