2 A Mindful Approach to Difficult Conversations
You may have noticed a couple things from that video. This leads us into the topic of Difficult Conversations, which usually nobody really enjoys having… so important conversations often get avoided because it’s just “easier” to silienty bottle up the issue or talk behind someones back...which usually just adds more stress to people’s lives. To learn how to have a difficult conversation, best is to read the book, Difficult Conversations. Today, we will do one of the exercises that the authors describe.

3 Practice Person A verbalize each of the 3 levels from YOUR point of view Content (what happening) Feelings (how did I feel) Identity (what’s at stake) Am I competent? Am I good person Am I worthy of love? Dyads (DO NOT explain all the steps of the exercise, reveal one slide at a time as participants go through the steps) 1.Describe the “three levels of the conversations” from your own point of view. (3 min). 2.Be sure that you leave time to get to number three, the identity question

4 Practice Person A verbalize each of the 3 levels from “THE OTHER’S”
point of view Content (what happening) Feelings (how did I feel) Identity (what’s at stake) Am I competent? Am I good person Am I worthy of love? 2. Now, we’re going to put you in the other person’s shoes. Before we do, let’s do the “Shift To Connection” we discussed earlier. On the first breath, settle the mind; second, see a similarity; third, offer kindness. Do it now at your own pace (short pause). Pretend you are seeing from the other party’s perspective and describe the three levels of the conversation from the other party’s point of view to the best of your abilities. (2 min)

5 Practice Person B verbalize each of the 3 levels from YOUR point of view Content (what happening) Feelings (how did I feel) Identity (what’s at stake) Am I competent? Am I good person Am I worthy of love? Describe the “three levels of the conversations” from your own point of view. (3 min). Be sure that you leave time to get to number three, the identity question
