Do Now Using about ½ a page, draw a diagram of earth in its elliptical orbit around the sun. Label it as completely as possible.

By the end of this lesson you should be able to: Describe how potential and kinetic energy affect movements of satellites in orbit. Explain how gravitational force between objects can change Explain why orbital speed changes as a satellite changes position in its orbit.

5 Kepler’s Second Law Satellites sweep across equal areas in equal amounts of time.

6 Why? Objects stay in orbit because of a balance between inertia and gravity. Gravity is determined by the mass of the objects and the distance between them. When a satellite gets closer to the object it orbits, it speeds up.

8 Kepler’s Third Law There is a direct relationship between a planet’s distance from the sun and the time it takes to orbit. 1 AU (astronomical unit) = the distance from earth to the sun
