Objective: To get everyone excited about a novel by using visual stimuli (pictures, objects, etc) To make reading fun by making it somewhat competitive. There shall be prizes for best artwork, best predictions, funniest acting or voices and a host of things as we continue through the novel. First however, we have to introduce the text.

Title: Fiction 1 Date: 8th January 2013 Activities: Pre-reading exercises Objective: Be prepared to read a new novel.

Activity ‘What is this story about’?
What follows will help you make educated guesses as to what will happen in the story. At the end of this class you shall be asked to make predictions. Like the X Factor, we shall open them at the end, when the novel is finished. Throughout the class, keep this question in your head: ‘What is this story about’?

Private Peaceful Title Would you all write down three words which come to mind when you read this title.

Later I shall be asking you to create more interesting titles. You might perhaps note any ideas for this in your reflective journal.

Cover I see, I think, I wonder.

Also I shall be asking you to create a more interesting cover after we’ve read the novel – reflective journal – ideas.

Propbox In the bag are an assortment of items linked to the story.
In groups decide on the kind of character to whom these belong. Be specific – detail background, likely kind of story etc. You have 4 MINUTES to come up with ideas and 4 minutes to write them down. Someone from each group shall then talk about what they deduced (so have something written everyone - Bulletpoints).

Secret predictions. On these cards, write out what you believe the story is going to be about. When we are finished the novel, we shall only then open up these predictions. The most accurate, interesting and least obvious prediction shall win a prize.

Homework Read the first five pages (7 – 11) and spend five minutes writing in your reflection journal afterwards. The important thing is to write about what your thinking but this sheet might help you structure your thoughts.
