Periodic Table Families and Properties
4
Properties of Metals Malleable- able to be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking Ductile- able to be drawn out into a thin wire Luster- “to shine” Excellent conductor of heat and electricity Most elements on the periodic table are metals
5
Properties of Non-Metals
Are NOT good conductors of heat or electricity Brittle Little or no metallic luster
6
Properties of Metalloids
Share properties of both metals and non-metals Semi-conductors= insulate and conduct electricity Very useful for technological equipment, such as computer chips
7
Families of the Periodic Table
8
Families of the Periodic Table
Group 1- Alkali Metals (1 valence electron) Most reactive metal family; explode when mixed with water Group 2- Alkaline Earth Metals (2 valence electrons) Reactive metals but not as reactive as Alkali Groups Transition Metals Gold, silver, iron, and copper are examples, just to name a few Group 17- Halogens (7 valence electrons) “salt formers” Group 18- Noble Gases Virtually non-reactive due to full outer/valence shell
