1 Nigerian Building Collapse

2 Approximately 37 people have been rescued from a building that collapsed Wednesday morning in the Nigerian city of Lagos. But many more are trapped under the rubble, including dozens of children. Several news outlets reported at least eight people died, as of Wednesday night. The three-story commercial and residential building, which housed an illegal nursery and primary school, crumpled into a pile of concrete slabs and dust just after 10 a.m. local time. Students were already attending class on the top floors of the structure and more than 100 children are believed to be enrolled in the school. Images from the scene on social media show rescue workers and volunteers frantically looking for survivors amid the destruction. Building collapses are not uncommon in Lagos, Nigeria's most populous city and commercial capital, where developers often circumvent building codes and use subpar materials. A study produced by Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing concluded 54 buildings collapsed across the country within a period of four years.

3 In Other News Dementia not only affects memory and quality of life, it can be fatal. A report released Thursday by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the rate of Americans who died from dementia has more than doubled from 30.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2000 to 66.7 in The term dementia encompasses disease states that impair memory and result in a decline in cognitive function. These conditions seem to be affecting more of the population as it is expected to affect 14 million people age 65 and older by 2060, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort received a total sentence of about 7 1/2 years in federal prison on Wednesday following the guilty plea in his Washington, D.C., conspiracy case. Separately on Wednesday, a grand jury in New York City produced an indictment of its own against Manafort, meaning he has more legal woes ahead of him. Although many people in the country have spoken about the possibility of President Trump pardoning Manafort, if convicted and imprisoned in New York, a presidential pardon could not provide him clemency on the state charges. Presidential pardons only work with federal concerns not state issues.
