Theory: Comparing hazards
Enquiry Question How does the nature of geophysical hazards vary between places and events? Lesson Objectives: To contrast two contemporary contrasting case studies each for volcanic hazards, earthquake hazards and mass movement hazards

Hazard Profiles The following diagram shows the hazard profile of two contemporary earthquakes. On the left are the characteristics of the hazard. The numbering on the top relates to severity.  As can be seen the tw0 hazards have very similar profiles with the green profile being marginally more severe across the profile. The hidden box reveals which hazards they were as well as the impacts.

Read the sheet from the study guide (embedded on the weebly) and page in Oxford textbook and make notes on factors such as time of day, population density, buildings etc…

Example exam question 1 Discuss the importance of hazard profiles in terms of both the assessment of hazard severity as well as its application for hazard management (10)

Example exam question 2 Assess the reasons why vulnerability of communities to geophysical hazards vary in contrasting places of the world. (10)

Example exam question 3 Discuss the extent to which you agree with the statement 'that risks that communities are exposed to from geophysical hazards depends almost entirely on the magnitude of the event'. (10)
