CAST – Reconfigurability Mobile layers Intelligent decisions Processing Resource Allocation Configuration Retrieval & Management Object Oriented control approaches Interfacing to Processing …… MCU DSP FPGA ASIC FPAA Hybrids Discrete Interfaces
12
CAST – Reconfigurability Physical Resources MCU/DSP –C/C++/assembly/RTOS/high level –Device independence is possible –Object oriented approaches well developed –Resources Processing time IO speed Memory
13
CAST – Reconfigurability Physical Resources FPGA/FPAA/Hybrids –Bitstream controlled from dedicated implementation –Device independence not developed –Object oriented approaches not developed –Resources Configurable fixed resource Internal device routing IO interfaces Memory
14
CAST – Reconfigurability Physical Resources ASIC/Discrete components –Parameters to control very limited function –Device dependant –Object oriented approaches possible –Resources Fixed resource On, off, or modified function
15
CAST – Reconfigurability Physical Resources Interfaces –Data Transferral between functional tasks within different devices –Object oriented approaches possible –Resources Fixed dependant upon system Time/resource shared devices New mechanisms are required
16
CAST – Reconfigurability Conclusion Some enabling technologies are more developed than others Techniques are required for effective design of the processing system and efficient use of resources. i.e. FPGA for CAST Device dependence is a problem ! How are capabilities characterised for such systems ??
