3 WHY a working group on Film Education?
Film as art and modality at the level of the written word -> Experience in cinemas, in classrooms and at home -> Understanding film as a format for expression and communication Film as the legacy of the 20. and 21. century history -> Understanding our heritage as it has been documented and screened -> The impact of film on our historical understanding Film as an open space for reflection -> Personal, social and cultural exploration, medium for expression and cultural exchange Film as the mother of multi-media -> Film production skills is key to creative and collaborative learning

4 Linking Film and Media Literacy Film Education is the creative heart of Media Literacy
FILM LITERACY MEDIA LITERACY The level of understanding of film, the ability to be conscious and curious in the choice of films; the competence to critically watch a film and to analyse its content, cinematography and technical aspects; and the ability to manipulate its language and technical resources in creative moving image production. Critical thinking and understanding of 21st century media requires reflection and creative skills with film and media: Understanding of film as format for expression, communication, dialogue, news, knowledge sharing, exploration and manipulation Understanding of narrative and stylistic charateristics of film Understanding the impact of film on individuals and society Productive and collaborative abilities with film and media are necessary for active and critical participation in the 21st Century "Media literacy" is an umbrella expression that includes all technical, cognitive, social, civic and creative capacities that allow a citizen to access the media, to have a critical understanding of the media and to interact with it.
