1 THE HERO’S JOURNEY TEXTS: Moana

2 The Journey The Departure
Events happen in the ordinary world, then extraordinary, then back again The Return The Initiation The Innermost Cave The Road of Trials

3 Ordinary vs. Extraordinary/known vs. unknown
- This is the home of the hero - The hero feels comfortable in this environment and lives among people he knows EXTRAORDINARY - This is a world that is very different from the home of the hero - The world may be magical or extraordinary in some way or simply unknown to the hero or uncomfortable for him or her

4 The Departure - Movement from ordinary/known to extraordinary/unknown
- The hero commits to moving forward to embark on his journey

5 The initiation - This is when the hero realizes that he/she is no longer in the “known” world - It usually is the first obstacle in the new unknown world or first lesson the hero learns - The hero may also meet a mentor or helper – usually someone who is older to guide them

6 The road of trials - This is the step where the hero encounters many obstacles and situations he or she must fight or overcome.

7 The Innermost Cave - Happens in the extraordinary/unknown world
- After the hero enters the extraordinary world, he or she is tested greatly, meeting new allies and enemies, eventually leading up to the innermost cave - He or she may encounter doubt or feelings of uncertainty/lack of confidence

8 The Return - Movement from the extraordinary/unknown
world to the ordinary/known world - After claiming whatever reward is made available after the ordeal, the hero begins the journey back home with the treasure/reward - There may be an additional test/tests on the way back home and all conflicts are resolved
