1 1. Topics for essay* (20%) * Only choose ONE topic from the above
From the plays used in this course, you have to choose ONE protagonist and explain the reasons for your preference. Your essay must include specific references / examples from the play. Write an essay to compare and contrast the historical background of TWO Renaissance playwrights. Discuss whether their contrasting upbringing affected their works in any way. If you were to stage any one of the Renaissance plays discussed in this course, which one would you choose and explain the reasons for your choice. * Only choose ONE topic from the above

2 General guidelines for Essay
Essay is from five to ten pages long (A4), font 12, Times New Roman, double spacing with proper margin and grammatically comprehensible. The essay must have an introduction, body and conclusion. Citation to references must follow the MLA format. The content of your existing module is useful for the purpose of this assignment but the use of other references is encouraged.

3 What to do when you write the essay?
Do not exceed the page limit (between 5-10 pages) Do adhere to the prescribed convention such as the font, pagination, and margin If you write more than required, the one grading might become strained and can’t be fair in the grading

4 Next, Do not write last minute and submit in the morning/midnight
It will show that you do not have the time to edit your work properly Draft your paper straight away after you got the topic by accumulating materials

5 What more, Think about your topic thoroughly
Do not simply skim through and do not write in the form of short note Do elaborate your points as instructed in the guideline Only provide subheadings when needed Do submit on the stipulated due date

6 If you are still not sure how to write the essay,
Please refer to Kirszner, L.G. & Mandell, S.R. (eds.). Literature: Reading, Reacting, Writing. 6th ed. Boston: Thomson. 2007 Chapter 38 – Reading and Writing about Drama

7 2. Short Project (20%) Instruction for this task
If you were to stage either one of Shakespeare’s plays (Midsummer Night’s Dream or Hamlet), how would you write the script for the stage? Bear in mind that the staged play should last about ONE HOUR and you as the scriptwriter has the freedom to omit, edit, change, or adapt the play to whatever form you felt suitable for amateur staging. As reference please get a copy of A Midsummer Night’s Dream : Shakespeare Appropriated in 60 Minutes (2013) by Arbaayah Ali Termizi from Penerbit UPM
