1 Project 1: IoT-enabled smart mobility devices for aging and rehabilitation REU Students: Kelly Fullin & Nafisa Mostofa Graduate mentors: Sharare Zehtabian & Safa Bacanli Faculty mentor(s): Dr. Turgut & Dr. Bӧlӧni Week 3 (June 10 – June 14, 2019) Project Description: We are working on the smart walker for the visually impaired The walker has four legs with wheels (rollator) and uses a Kinect RGB-D sensor to employ both a depth imaging and a cloud point approach Haptic feedback is given to the user through vibrations in the handles which signal the presence and proximity of hazards Accomplishments: Got the Raspberry Pi and Kinect sensor up and running with the code from Chris’s GitHub Made several fixes to the code Lowered the Kinect to see if that helps cancel out some IR interference, still need to test Found other possible solutions for sunlit environments including Kinect v2 and Intel R200 Problem & Solutions: The code as it is on GitHub didn’t run quite right so we made a few changes Lots of troubleshooting the pi and Kinect In order to test our setup in a sunlit environment we need a sunlit environment, depending on the weather this may not be possible for a few days Plans for next week: Test new lowered setup as soon as weather permits Decide if we need to change/add cameras or sensors and if so which Begin adding our own code

2 Original setup (left) and our new setup (right) with Kinect and mounting basket moved closer to the ground
