“I dreamt my lady came and found me dead”
Romeo is still in Mantua. He has a dream. What sort of dream is it? Is it a happy dream? In the dream he is dead and he has to be brought back to life. Juliet finds him dead and kisses him to bring him back. Do you think this is Shakespeare foreshadowing again? While Romeo remembers his dream his servant comes in with news from Verona. Remember the guy in the movie who saw Juliet’s funeral? That was him. He tells Romeo what he saw and Romeo reacts to the news. Romeo upon hearing the news that Juliet is dead says “I defy you stars.” He is rebelling against the heavens and the fate that they have handed him. He refuses to accept the fact that Juliet is dead. Stars correspond to astrology, which is associated with one's fate, destiny, fortune, and future. Who looks at here looks at their horoscope and believes what it tells you?

“Your looks are pale and wild, and do import some misadventure.”
Romeo doesn’t take the news well and even Balthasar tells Romeo that he looks like he might do something rash. “Import misadventure” Romeo dismisses the concerns and asks if Balthasar has a message from the friar. He doesn’t and he leaves. What does Romeo say he is going to do? Romeo says “I’ll be with thee straight” implying that he will be with him soon. Romeo is going back to Verona. He is seeking to deny fate by doing what? “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight.” How is he going to do it? Romeo stops an apothecary or a pharmacist, who he knows can make poison out of herbs. He says the man is poor and miserable. He’s already noticed that if he needed to buy poison from this man quickly, he would probably sell it to him. He goes to the apothecary and asks him for some poison. What does the apothecary say? The apothecary says that while he has poisons like that he will face the death penalty for selling such things. How does Romeo convince him?

“Art thou so bare and full of wretchedness, And fear’st to die?”
Romeo notices how the man is so poor, so skinny, so visibly hungry and he still fears death? He states that following the law won’t make him rich, but selling him the poison might make him some money. The apothecary, who Romeo stated was clearly in a bad financial position to be turning down the money accepts and says that it is only because he is poor, but not because he wants to. He gives Romeo the poison and he says that even if Romeo were are strong was twenty men it would still kill him instantly. It must be quite a poison. Romeo gives the man his money and says that he himself is actually handing out the poison. That money is actually worse than what the medicine he received. He exits the scene and intends to go pay Juliet a visit. What is he planning on doing?
